Oil pollution does not just effect the water as you may think. The economy, wildlife, plants- even people cannot escape its grasp.
Water
Oil pollution effects the ocean or whatever other wather it is spilled into. It floats, and over time it spreads into a thin layer on top of the watter. This layer can be carried by the wind and waves all over the ocean.
Coastline
The most visable affect of an oil spill occur on the coastline. Oil covers everything- sand, driftwood, rocks, everything. This oil will saty on the coastline until either humans remove it or the weather takes it back out to sea.
Wildlife
Oil spills have a devastating affect on any wildlife they come into contact with. Eating the oil or something else that swam through it will poison the animal that does so. This either kills them or hurts their ability to reproduce. When the oil gets on an animal it wieghs them down so they drown or they are poisoned in the effort to clean themselves of it. Besides this direct affect, the affect the oil has on the habitats these creatures live in is also terrible.
Economy
Even the economy sees the effects of an oil spill. When the oil makes it to beaches, tourism goes down because no one wants to have to deal with that while on vacation. Oil is also very expensive. With the magnitude of oil lost during a spill, companies lose millions of dollars. That combined with the bad press an oil spill gives a company, it really hurts them.
